Sony Fired Hundreds of Online Employees Just Days Before PSN Attack!


Just days before PSN was "hacked," Sony fired over 200 employees in their online division.

In Sony massive corporation style thinking, once March 31th, 2011 rolls around they decide to get rid of any "dead-weight", in this case, employees they think are "useless" or no longer needed so they can close off the "year-end books" with various "claimed losts" to save corporation taxes, just like any big massive corporation thinks, only for themselves and their "bottom line", not for the little human beings slaving away everyday for their profits.

Like all layoffs that are hard to swallow, this case was a big one, one 1/3 of the staff that worked in the ONLINE division, in all over 200 employees were given their sad "pink slip" 2 week notice, which means they had to work right up until the very dates that Sony had to shutdown the PSN network!

Even tho Sony rented servers from AT&T data center, being the "unmanaged" type, any Sony employee in the SOE dept. would be able to gain access showing their "photo id" badge to do maintenance work on the servers, if they needed more then just "whitelisted" remote server access from their office.

Today, Sony again announce that all the user account "passwords" were "hashed" on their blog, but any key online employee that was layoff could very well have easy access to the needed cryptographic hash function information in regard to any encryption that might have been used on the servers, including CC access for billing and accounting.

Sony Online Entertainment has laid off a third of its staff, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The move means 205 employees will lose their jobs and the company will shut down offices in Denver, Tucson and Seattle.

On April 27, 2011, Sony, the parent company of SOE, released statements regarding an intrusion, on or about April 18th, into the PlayStation Network, and the potential theft of up to 77 Million subscribers personal data. Sony maintains that PSN and SOE are hosted and run on completely separate subsystems and that the PlayStation Network intrusion had no major affect on SOE's online services.

On May 2, 2011, SOE completely interrupted their online services. Over the previous month several intrusions of PSN have caused the developers to post messages of concern and apology, but also assurances the SOE servers and systems were not compromised. This most recent development has shut the service down entirely with the message: "We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily. In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday)."

Even tho some of these employees were in working in remote offices, they could have easy had whitelisted server access to the San Diego HQ to do their daily work, it just seems very strange that suddenly both networks go down after a massive layoff of KEY ONLINE SONY EMPLOYEES when they have to work knowing it is their last days on the job being a lowly paid slave to evil corporation.

Dear Sony, you need to look inside your own organization!

Sony loses ANOTHER 12,700 credit card account numbers, 24.6 million MORE accounts compromised
Quote: Following up on this morning's news (First PSN, now Sony shutdowns their SOE network!) that Sony Online Entertainment servers were offline across the board, Sony Online Entertainment announced that it has lost 12,700 customer credit card numbers as the result of an attack, and roughly 24.6 million accounts may have been breached.

The company took SOE servers offline after learning of the attack last evening, and today detailed the unfortunate results: "approximately 12,700 non-US credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates (but not credit card security codes), and about 10,700 direct debit records of certain customers in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain" were lost, apparently from "an outdated database from 2007." Of the 12,700 total, 4,300 are alleged to be from Japan, while the remainder come from the aforementioned four European countries.

Furthermore, Sony ties today's announcement directly to the recent attacks on PlayStation Network and Qriocity, with Sony saying SOE customer information was stolen on either April 16 or April 17. Sony has repeatedly stated that its PSN servers and SOE servers are not part of the same network, so it remains unclear just how these two attacks are tied together.

Der Elektronikhersteller Sony hat mitgeteilt, dass beim Hacker-Angriff im April nicht nur das Playstation Network (PSN) und Qriocity im Visier waren, sondern auch Sony Online Entertainment (SOE). Hier konnten sogar Kreditkartendaten entwendet werden.

In einer Pressemitteilung erklärte das Unternehmen, dass rund 24,6 Millionen Datensätze gestohlen werden konnten. Sie enthalten die Namen der Nutzer, ihre Passwörter, E-Mail-Adressen, Geburtsdaten, Angaben über das Geschlecht sowie die Telefonnummern. Dieser Angriff ereignete sich bereits am 16. und 17. April, also direkt vor den Angriffen auf das Playstation Network und Qriocity, die zwischen dem 17. und 19. April stattfanden.

Das Eindringen in Sony Online Entertainment wurde erst jetzt im Rahmen von Untersuchungen entdeckt. Der Betrieb des Online-Angebots wurde am gestrigen Montag eingestellt. Man stellte klar, dass es sich nicht um einen weiteren Hacker-Angriff handelt, sondern lediglich das Ausmaß der bereits bekannten Attacke größer ist als ursprünglich angenommen.

Neben der großen Datenbank von Sony Online Entertainment wurde auch eine kleinere Datenbank aus dem Jahr 2007 kopiert. Sie enthält die Kreditkartendaten von etwa 12.700 Nicht-US-Kunden sowie weitere 10.700 Bankverbindungen. Der gestohlene Datensatz enthält jedoch nicht die zu den Kreditkarten gehörigen Sicherheits-Codes. Kunden aus Deutschland, Österreich, den Niederlanden und Spanien sind betroffen. All diese Personen werden über den Umstand in Kenntnis gesetzt.

Sony war zunächst davon ausgegangen, dass der Dienst Sony Online Entertainment nicht von den Hacker-Angriffen betroffen war. Erst am 1. Mai wurde man darauf aufmerksam und stellte den Betrieb des Angebots umgehend ein. Externe Sicherheitsspezialisten kümmern sich nun um die kompromittierten Systeme, um herauszufinden, wie der Einbruch abgelaufen ist.

Sony gibt an, dass derzeit keine Hinweise über eine illegale Verwendung der gestohlenen Daten vorliegen. Als Reaktion auf den Angriff werden die Sicherheitsmaßnahmen umfassend verbessert. Dazu gehört auch ein Umzug der Server in ein neues Rechenzentrum, das stärker abgesichert ist. Sicherheitsexperten und Datenschützer hatten Sony Schlamperei vorgeworfen. Der Vorfall wird voraussichtlich ein rechtliches Nachspiel haben.

Schon wieder haben Hacker eine Sony-Website angegriffen. Sie kamen offenbar an Daten von einer Million Kunden. Teile davon wurden kopiert und sind nun im Netz. Für das Unternehmen ist das schon keine Krise mehr - sondern der Regelfall.


Hamburg - Er hat es ja kommen sehen. Sony-Chef Howard Stringer warnte Mitte Mai vor weiteren Hacker-Angriffen auf Netzwerke des Unternehmens. Zuvor war bekannt geworden, dass Hacker sich Zugriff auf die Daten von 100 Millionen Mitgliedern des Playstation-Netzwerks verschaffen konnten. Stringer entschuldigte sich - und warnte: Der Schutz von persönlicher Daten sei ein "endloser Prozess", hundertprozentige Sicherheit könne es womöglich gar nicht geben. Keine Garantie für Nutzerdaten in der "schlechten neuen Welt" der Internetkriminalität.


Wie Recht er behalten sollte. In der Nacht von Donnerstag auf Freitag meldete die Hacker-Gruppe LulzSec einen Angriff auf SonyPictures.com. Über eine manipulierte Datenbankabfrage standen den Hackern angeblich mehr als eine Million Datensätze offen: Name, E-Mail-Adresse, Anschrift, Geburtsdatum, Passwort. Einen Teil der Daten kopierte LulzSec, sie sind nun als Datei in Internet-Tauschbörsen Umlauf. Außerdem verlor Sony auf diese Weise Codes und Coupons für Musikdateien.
