NES Emu-Comparison (April/May 2004)

Tested Emulators this Time:

FakeNES, which sadly had only changes on its Homepage since the last test, version 0.3.1, the fresh updated franchise FCEU, version 0.98.7, the just "awakened from the dead" MarioNES, version 1.5, Nessie with its relatively new Version 1.02, our "titleholder" Nestopia, wich sadly had no update since its nearly flawless victory on our last Comparsion Test (maybe it wasnt even necessary) version 1.09, the older Nintendulator 0.9, which gave some good results last time, the newbie UberNES, version 1 rev 2, the never-tired VirtuaNES version 0.92 and the Java Emu NEScafe.

Testing Machine:

AMD Athlon XP 2200+, Geforce 4MX AGP8x, Sound Blaster 5.1 Digital, 512Megs RAM, Cherry keyboard, Logitech MX500 mouse, updated Windows XP Pro, updated (stable) drivers.

GUI & Emu:

FakeNES:

No Changes since the last test here. The GUI, wich (probably) needed two DLLs to be downloaded, needs -- as i said -- getting used to but its not that bad. It has several Settings, for example a DOS and a Windows GUI (ZSNES should try to build something like this too) and all needed GFX Filters -- Scanlines and interpolation. Only Sound is a little weird, it doesnt stutter or scratch tough. If you switch the color palette to "Nesticle" FakeNES looks quite good. 16/20 Pts.

FCEU:

The GUI is kinda intuitional, but VERY clearly arranged. Or lets say: it doesnt have too much Settings. In exchange, the Emulation was one of the best in Test. The Sound totaly Rocks, with 22khz and 8Bit Settings, i just had to plug my NES into my TV and do a little Jam session again *LOL* - GFX are solid but there are absolutely no Filters. 16/20 Pts.

MarioNES:

Huh? What is this? This Emu has absolutely no Settings and the GUI seems to be a little... err... weird. I dont think i will be able to test this one, because i generally dont get any GFX, besides the Sound is only MIDI Output. Too bad...

Nessie:

Hey! Thats a nice surprise :=) GUI is very simple and has absolutely no settings for Emulation itself, apart of PAL/NTSC setting. But you just dont need it here! Sound and GFX are perfect and all Modules were found with valid Timings. Sadly there are no Filters tough. 16/20

Nestopia:

Since there was no new Version since Testings in January this Year, it's all as usual. Perfect Emulation of Sound and GFX, many Settings and very good Timing detection. Thats all you need! This Emu is our reference for NES Sound, only one Emu sounds as perfect as Nestopia: VirtuaNES! 18/20 Pts.

NNNesterJ:

NNNesterJ seems to be a solid piece of Work and provides a huge ammount of Settings. GFX are working fine, only a few Games like ASO does show GFX Errors. (I'll comment later) Sound seems to have some sort of digital distortion (not that much but noticeable) and Timings are not checked properly, so sounds of PAL Games do not run at correct sound timings too. This Emu's not perfect but a good start. Sadly there were no WIP for some time now... 14/20 Pts.

UberNES:

Nice Name. But Names and outfit isnt all. The GUI looks fine, but there are some technical issues to solve yet. The GFX are looking average and sounds are digitally distorted yet. Also timings are acting strange. Just average right now, but we will see how the WIP is going on... 8/20 Pts.

VirtuaNES:

Its fun, starting this Emulator. You'll get it all: A almost complex ammount of Settings but very well sorted, so it stays intuitive to use, Perfect GFX and Sound Emulation (correct colors, no distortions in sound, perfect sound-gfx timing), almost perfect Timings and good compatiblicy (was the only emulator in this test which could run Famicom discs). There's no better Emulation yet. 20/20 Pts.

NESCafe:

Technical interesting idea, but hard to realize... This Emu has still some big problems with sound. And almost every game of our comparsion didnt work. So i decided to not test this Emu any further. Ratings would be horrible...

compatibility

FakeNES:

FakeNES had some nice tech goodies, such as pseudo stereo sound and other sfx effects. Sadly, there's no more WIP on it...

Nestopia:

During last test Nestopia had some Problems with the euro 3in1 Modul, altough I'm using the same Modul and same Emulator it worked this time?!?! weird... Nevertheless Nestopia showed again why its the reference in NES emulation - every game worked just fine with no problems.

UberNES:

The tested games made not that much fun, because the sound emulation is horrible bad, and the emulator doesn't seem to be that compatible.

Score:

Translation:

FakeNES: 31 of 60 points - 52% - 5 of 10 points
FCEU: 51 of 60 points - 85% - 9 of 10 points
Nessie: 51 of 60 points - 85% - 9 of 10 points
Nestopia: 58 of 60 points - 97% - 10 of 10 points
NNNesterJ: 42 of 60 points - 70% - 7 of 10 points
UberNES: 27 of 60 points - 45% - 5 of 10 points
VirtuaNES: 52 of 60 points - 87% - 9 of 10 points

Score is based with 1/3 on GUI and quality of emulation and with 2/3 on compability to games. (I prefer an emulator running some games not 100% correct over an emulator just running 3 games perfectly) Nestopia defend the first position again, but FCEU, Nessie and VirtuaNES are coming, altough VirtuaNES is still missing some compability to attack Nestopia. MarioNES and NESCafe haven't got a final score, because they're lacking too many features at the moment to get a reasonable score. All emulators which got 4 or 5 stars on the last test and didn't got an update since then weren't taken into account again, because the same collection of games was used for testing - so no changes on this side ;)
