  • Beta 15:

    - Vertical blank state was taken from wrong variable when in programmed mode, forcing fast mode to not be used when drawing programmed mode bitplane graphics.
    - CIA SDR register added to CIA dump (c debugger command)
    - BPLCON4 bitplane XOR value change delay was not correct.
    - Fixed 1200TX second window logic and also implemented second window restriction: top 3 bits of window 2 are taken from window 1 position.
    - Some changes to support future multiple PCI bridgeboards and PCI board reordering.
    - Hide expansion device "autoboot disabled" checkbox when device does not have any autoboot jumpers. (or have nothing to do with storage)
    - "Add Harddrive" with MBR partition storage device and multiple partitions: first item was mix of whole drive's/first partition's properties. (b1)
    - Added https://aminet.net/package/docs/hard/512kWOM A1000 512k WOM expansion emulation. Option in Expansions->Built-in expansions.
    - Last Denise RGA cycle of new "fast" line was skipped. If it had custom register write, it was not seen by Denise side.
    - Fixed fast mode display panel scanlines.
    - Check native mode screen changes when vsync starts (when whole frame is complete), not when Agnus vertical counter resets. Last few lines glitches when switching modes should be gone.
    - Some FPU operations could run slightly slower in non-JIT mode but JIT FPU ticked. Force JIT FPU off when JIT is off.
    - CPU/chipset timing update. Non-JIT fastest possible modes are almost as fast as 5.3.1 again.
    - Fast mode bitplane optimization that detects if bitplane line changed or not is now disabled. It seems to be slower than always doing fast mode redraw of the bitplane line because it moves host CPU work from main thread to drawing thread and reduces main thread memory copies and comparisons that were needed to check if bitplane had changed.
    - NOTE: Paula serial port emulation may not work, it is under yet another rewrite.. (Stunt Car Racer serial link has problems..)

Note:
  • Left side of display had corruption if horizontal resolution was small enough.
  • Make sure drawing thread has finished before exit or config change.
  • Fixed bad D3D surface lock/unlock functions.
  • Keyboard reset without keyboard low level emulation didn't force CPU to reset state while reset keys are being kept pressed. CPU kept executing, possibly random instructions because ROM overlay is already active and autoconfig boards are deactivated, possibly causing random illegal memory accesses being logged.
  • Matrox emulation blitter background thread support re-enabled.
  • Remaining software filter support removed.
  • Fixed slirp bug (has been since it was added) that didn't seem to affect WinUAE but affected other UAE ports.
  • GDI mode didn't free all resources when native<>RTG mode switched.
  • Closing last open configuration tree node didn't update registry/ini.
  • Debugger command H DMA debugger listing support is back. Now only listed if D is appended (HD).
  • CPU KS ROM accesses are listed in DMA debugger. 68000/010 only because 68020+ can have faster ROM access time than chipset. Uses CIA DMA debugger line but because there is not enough space, only R/W state, size and address is shown.
  • -nomt skipped RGA buffering start/end overlap handling, for example copper color writes near the start of scanline were skipped.
  • Genlock display had vertical wobble effect in threaded mode. Genlock, grayscale and CD32FMV are working. Other display port adapters should not be used yet.
  • Non-CE fast mode subpixel scroll fix. (May not be perfect yet)
  • TV overscan modes didn't affect fast draw mode horizontal blanking.

Note:
  • First official beta version with multithreaded Denise/Lisa emulation. Do not use winuae.7z anymore unless specifically asked.
  • Major performance improvement! Finally faster than older versions!
  • Denise side processing is now in separate thread (bitplane shifting, sprite shifting, bitplane/sprite planar to chunky, special modes, bitplane/sprite priorities, strobes/blanking, RGB out etc). Line-based Denise RGA buffering made this possible because it cleanly separates Agnus and Denise logic and Denise is almost fully "fire and forget". Only exception is CLXDAT collision register reads which needs to flush all queued lines (and isn't cycle-accurate yet anyway). AGA color reads don't cause problems because they are can be done in Agnus side emulation. Line queue is quite small (max ~10 lines), it won't cause any latency problems. Compatibility is not affected. (In previous UAE versions Agnus side processed whole frame, then Denise side did the rest which was not very optimal because temporary frame data needed huge RAM buffers)
  • nomt command line disables multithreaded Denise emulation.
  • Previously always used temporary graphics buffering is only done if needed: display port adapter enabled (which also includes genlock in image mode, grayscale and CD32 FMV). This also increases performance. Only affects native chipset modes. When using display port adapter: complete chipset display frame is drawn to temporary RAM buffer, then display port adapter emulation merges it with any display port adapter graphics and writes the result to D3D texture. When this is bypassed, chipset graphics is directly drawn to D3D texture in single pass.
  • Any enabled display port adapter (including genlock in image mode, grayscale or CD32 FMV) or enabled light pen disables non-CE border/bitplane optimizations.
  • All software filters removed. Removal of always-enabled temporary graphics buffer makes software filter support annoying and they are obsolete anyway.
  • b12 CE mode bitplane optimizations disabled (commented out), they are not needed anymore and they caused side-effects and glitches that are really difficult to fix completely without making optimizations useless. Non-CE mode optimizations are supported and will not be removed.
  • Disable NTSC STRLONG strobe emulation if no STRLONG strobes have not been seen since last frame. Switching to NTSC and then back to PAL won't anymore cause slightly reduced performance (Accurate STRLONG emulation needs more complex line drawing code). NTSC still have right edge glitches on fast modes.
  • Tiny blitter optimization.
  • Adjusted non-fastest possible CPU mode frame waiting behavior (timing is different because now drawing is done after line has been emulated, in previous versions all lines were emulated first, then drawn in separate pass)

Note:
  • Cycle-exact mode drawing optimizations partially implemented.
  • Programmed native display mode fast mode optimization fixes (both CE and non-CE).
  • Added Optimizations select menu to Chipset panel (so far only meant for testing and debugging). Subpixel option does not anymore affect it (and possibly goes away soon). Full = do not redraw lines that have not changed, draw in simple mode if changed and display parameters have not changed. Partial = do not redraw line if not changed. Note that Full can't handle condition where bitplane crosses strobe (horizontal counter reset), usual effect is to have garbage in far right border instead of border color. I am not yet sure how to solve this.
  • Field+ display modes fixed in fast modes. (Disables also optimization of not drawing when line has not changed)
  • ERSY=1 stuck stopped condition didn't check for input events and didn't do display refresh etc.
  • If real HD/memory card has Windows supported partition table and partition metadata can be queried without administrator privileges (always normally possible?) but administrator privileges are needed to read/write partition data, list partition(s) in Add Harddrive dialog with "ACCESS DENIED" text. Previously partition(s) were not listed. Maybe this is less confusing than hiding them completely when administrator privileges are needed.
  • Expansion panel SCSI controller ID selection enable/disable/selection fixed. (For example A4091)
  • Configuration file list's expanded tree nodes are stored in registry/ini and are loaded and expanded automatically in following sessions.
  • Autoscale coordinate fixes (still might work strangely in some situations). Auto integer scale still has issues.
  • Performance testing: first check that running program is using optimized code paths enough (xxx% in log is at least 30% or higher = not too much Denise related copper activity or sprites), then check CPU usage or max warp mode FPS using different optimization settings.

  • Some more fast (includes any non-memory cycle-exact mode) optimizations and most remaining missing features added. All normal screenmodes are now supported in fast modes, only remaining always-"slow" is lines with copper activity and sprites. Both probably will be supported in the future but they are not that important. Copper activity only if it does not cause any immediately visible effect on screen (for example color change inside hblank). Previous betas CPU feature restrictions removed.
    • BPLCON2 KILLEHB bit disabled EHB without BPLCON0 ECSENA bit.
    • Fast mode drawing now uses mode/doubling/resolution specific optimized generated code (genlinetoscr)
    • HAM6, HAM8, DPF and EHB fast modes fully implemented.
    • Border color lines are also now fast mode drawn if line is still border and only color changed.
    • OCS/ECS invalid PLFxPRI value (>=5) chipset feature supported in fast modes.
    • Sprites were not always correctly visible in fast modes.
    • Fixed shifted display in fast modes if HDIW opened before bitplanes started.
    • Some more fast mode optimization and fixes.
    • CPU requirement is back to SSE2. Normal non-ce chipset modes should be now fast enough (as fast or faster than old version?) with older CPUs now.
  • Background information: "slow" mode is always used to draw line when line's parameters have changed. When line has been drawn, parameters calculated by slow mode are stored. If line and its parameters have not changed since it was drawn using slow mode: do nothing. If line has changed (or colors changed) or horizontal scrolling has changed but parameters are same: draw it using fast mode using slow mode calculated parameters. This makes fast mode worth the trouble because it does not need do any complex calculations or handle weird special cases and it is very common to have parameter changes only in few lines. (Many demos are obvious exception but they usually need cycle-accurate CPU anyway). ("parameters" = custom registers used to configure display)

Note:
  • This update includes most planned non-ce mode optimizations. As long as display mode is mostly normal, performance should be quite good even when all lines change every frame. Optimizations still need optimizations (most code is not optimized because it makes testing and fixing much easier. Too early optimization is rarely a good idea.). Part of these optimizations can be also used in CE modes but I am not yet sure if it is worth the trouble because cycle based chipset emulation can't be bypassed like it can be in non-ce modes, total performance improvement may be quite small.
  • Added another optimized bitplane mode: if line's parameters (DDF/DIW/BPLCON,FMODE etc. Except BPLCON1) have not changed but content or colors have since previous field: draw the line directly from chip ram (bypassing DMA emulation) using quick line-based mode because it is guaranteed that it is safe to do for this line. Currently only supports normal bitplane modes (no HAM or DPF etc but these will be implemented later). Currently uses very naive planar to chunky conversion code. (Some SSE based would be nice). This should improve performance when most of native mode display changes continuously. Now all non-cycle exact configurations should be as fast or faster than old versions. WARNING: Programs that have "unaligned" DDFSTRT are not yet correct and will have lines with horizontal offset mixed with lines with correct horizontal offset. Subpixel scrolling is not fully supported yet.
  • Reset stored line state (redraw whole screen) when any config change is detected.
  • Optimized hardwired (PAL/NTSC) horizontal match cycle logic. Enable programmed mode horizontal match logic only if at least one horizontal programmed mode register is updated, don't unnecessarily enable it if only vertical register is updated. This should speed up cycle-exact modes.
  • Immediate blitter in fastest possible modes was not as fast as previously. It is still not as fast as it was previously because this change can reduce pure CPU emulation speed, need tweaking later. This was unrelated to display emulation rewrite. For example AIBB EllipseTest.
  • If Picasso96 SetSwitch() is called requesting switching to native mode but mode is already native mode: do nothing and don't create useless log message. (Happens when dragging native mode screens with Picasso96 loaded which caused unnecessary config changes and stored line state resets)

  • Fixed b8 optimization glitches, first bitplane line had horizontal offset in some situations (for example Pinball Dreams), Denise horizontal counter was not reset to correct "past" position and in some situations top part of screen was filled with black.
  • If config file only has uaehfx config entries (No much older filesystem2 or hardfile2 entries before first uaehfx line), uaehfx entries are now fully loaded. uaehfx was added long time ago as a replacement for fs2/hf2 but they were only used to load extended information for previously loaded hardfile2 entry if it was real harddrive. When saving config loaded without filesystem2/hardfile2, only newer uaehfx entries are now written to config file.
  • b8 when exiting debugger, restore focus back to previously active window now also works when log window is not initially open.
  • Genlock misdetection (and hang) was still possible in some configs randomly.
  • NTSC + optimized mode long/short line toggle caused glitches. This is not easy to work around so now NTSC does not do Denise side long/short line emulation unless at least memory cycle exact is enabled. (Which only means extremely weird programs that abuse STRLONG strobe can only work in cycle exact modes). There is still edge NTSC glitches visible, will be fixed later.

Note:

Major optimization included, WB native modes (and other normal native modes that don't update whole screen every frame) are now much faster, closer/same as old pre-v6 versions.

Beta 8:

  • More optimizations, now also uses line based emulation if scanline has bitplanes but it has not changed since last frame and line has no copper activity and no sprites. This restores performance compared to previous WinUAE versions when mostly static native display is visible (like WB or SysInfo screen ) in non-cycle exact modes (including basic A500/A1200 + approximate CPU without CE). The less changing lines/copper activity the faster it becomes, almost static native screens are most likely faster than in old versions. Not perfect yet, some glitches can happen. Also more optimizations to do. This is more or less best of both worlds solution: chipset timing is accurate in all CPU modes (excluding blitter) but scanlines that have nothing interesting happening are emulated line based for best performance. Changed/non-changed line ratio logging is still active. Chipset panel subpixel emulation checkbox still disables this optimization.
  • When exiting debugger, restore focus back to previously active window.
  • b7 CD32 CD caching optimization didn't work correctly if identical sector range was requested back to back. Fixed. Affected at least FMV cartridge + VideoCD configuration.


Current chipset emulation overhead estimates:

RTG mode (no native mode visible): always linebased, very small chipset emulation overhead. (Same or faster than old versions)
Native, vblank or border only: only lines that have copper activity are not line based, small chipset emulation overhead. (Usually faster than old versions)
Native, bitplanes visible: line based mode when line has not changed and no sprites and no copper activity. Small chipset emulation overhead, the less lowers, the less overhead. Changed line or sprites or copper activity: high chipset emulation overhead. (Slower than old versions but can be also faster in some situations)

Memory cycle-exact enabled: always cycle-by-cycle chipset mode, high chipset emulation overhead.

TODO:

Detect lines that have "simple" copper activity where copper is only used to modify colors inside hblank (very common case) and emulate these in line based mode.
Emulate normal DMA mode sprites in line based mode.

Aira Force ist ein Amiga Emulator / Debugger für Windows, macOS und Linux.

 

Note:

At long last I am proud to present Aira Force 0.9.0. This is a big release for me, because it features a working Amiga 500 emulator. It is available to download now for Windows (64 and 32 bit), Mac, Linux (64-bit), and Raspberry Pi.

I hope it will be useful for disassembling software live. I often code while on a breakpoint, because the debugger provides so much more context to help improve the code. The same should be true for disassembling.
