I noticed a lot of fuss a while ago about the Roland MT32 emulation
and legal issues etc that made the necessary ROM files illegal.
And now we don't have a legal way of getting proper MT32 emulation.
So the result of this is that we have to listen to some very funky music
when we play our games that uses MT32, very annoying but i might have
a solution. The problem is the way that the GM instrument bank is arranged, it just different that the original MT32 bank is set up
so in "Jones in the fast lane" the drums get swapped with the piano
in MT32 mode which sound awful. A lot of us have soundblaster live
cards or better that uses Soundfonts, these are made after the GM
standard, but they can be changed to fit the Roland MT32 standard,
it just a matter of making a Soundfonts where the instrument bank
is correctly comprised. it would at least be an solution for soundblaster
users. Am i mad or does it sound like a solution? I could try to make an MT32 compatible Soundfont anyone is interested..

Some news on my progress, i have now managed to map what i need
to change in order to get this to work, but i need some advice on a
good GM Soundfont that i can re-comprise into a MT32 compatible
Soundfont, Ive actually got a extremely good Soundfont called
SGM-180 v1.5 the sample quality is extreme compared to the Original MT32 samples but so is the file size, its 180mb in size!!!. So i need a smaller GM soundfont to work on, if anyone knows about a moderate sized GM soundfont (max 30mb) with good sample quality it would be great. Having studio quality MT32 music is nice but 180mb is just way too much even if i found someone willing to host it, i have a 8mb soundfont
but the sampel quality is just to low.

The very first alpha release of my MT32 soundfont is ready!!!
I used a standard CTM8GM soundfont as a template for the
MT32 soundfont a lot of instruments is still missing or
misplaced but it works pretty well with TES:Arena
And i repeat this is an alpha release so the music
in some games will still sound strange

Edit: Damn 5mb limit.

Maybe it would be also a good idea to start a thread in the MT32 emulation subforum at http://vogons.zetafleet.com/

Ok here is the thread i started at http://vogons.zetafleet.com
No response yet though

Edit: forgot to say that MT32 compatible soundfont v0.3a is
ready for release, I'm working on a 4mb version as it would
be easier to distribute

Hello, Zandro.

Such a coincidence! Two Zandros interested in SoundFont design. I have built a few major banks in my day, including ZSF-GM, renditions of Conexant GM500 and OmniSynth, Piano.MIS.UOI, and some singular patches of professional value.

I shall let it be known that E-MU once released an MT-32 version of their synthset in the SoundFont format, its ROM samples totalling a mere 69.9KB. I don't know where this stands in the legal environment, but if these ROM samples can be successfully utilised in your reference and experimentation, I can send you a copy of the SoundFont immediately.

Additionally, you should know that I host the world's largest GM SoundFont distribution hub on ED2K and DC++, free of charge. If you need some more samples to work with in your project, view the partial listing and linkage of my share at http://zandro.freeunixhost.com/. I would like to have your new alpha set amongst the links, with your permisison. I compress everything using SFPack, providing the most compact download I can offer (40-80% smaller in any case).

On the side, I have never seen E-MU SoundFont Designer Beta, mostly because Vienna 1.36 offered a stronghold of complacency in the constructive process of a bank. Would you be willing to bounce a copy to me for the sake of research?

Intrigued,

Zandro 2

About the E-MU Soundfont Designer Beta, that i can`t give you
But i have the Vienna Sound Studio 2.40.55 witch actually is
better, i just got my hands on it and it`s light years better
that the 1,30/1,36 versions that are severely outdated now.
if you give me your e-mail i can send it to you. If you use
Vienna Sound Studio 2.40.55 together with Adobe Audition
you can really make some killer Soundfonts. About the
MT32 soundfont Ive made, yes you may post them on your
site with my permission

Thanks, but I also have a copy of Vienna 2.0 and Adobe Audition. I find the new Vienna holding true to its current state of beta, in that it is still buggy and not streamlined enough for my general use. Also, obtaining a copy of Adobe Audition 1.5 was a mistake on my behalf, as it is a clone of what the software used to be; that is, Syntrillium's Cool Edit Pro 2.1, which I prefer over anything else.

I tried Adobe Audition 2.0 a couple weeks ago while it was on display in an audio shop, and see that Adobe has ruined yet another great product by:

1. Adding a frustrating registration-over-phone mandation
2. Bloating the graphical interface with unnecessary clutter
3. Increasing the install size to 100MB + unused languages
4. Allocating an additional 40MB of RAM during initialisation

If you have 1.5 and want to upgrade, I'm informing you that the best Adobe has offered is someone else's past work, and when they took a swing at it, they hit the umpire in the balls on this one, as they have with the others.

Making a compatible MT-32 SoundFont is a tricky process. I offer my resources and the best of luck to you on your project if you are continuing with it.
